TOPIC: IDOLATRY                BIBLE TEXT: Exodus 32;1-10

MEMORY VERSE: “Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth” Exodus 20:4.

INTRODUCTION: The world today has become so sophisticated that Idol worshiping isn’t seen in the same barbaric way of the old times, but if we look deep enough, we will discover that Idol worshiping is on the all-time high. In today’s world, Idol worshiping has gone beyond the Golden Calf of Aron, and has extended to being the god in the heart of humans through various means. People worship music icons, sport legends, technological masterpieces, beautiful works of art and even personal belongings like mobile phones, cars, mansions and list goes on.

STUDY GUIDE:

  1. God created all things: Col 1:16-17

It is inconceivable that man who God gave His very best (Jesus Christ), to be sacrificed on the cross in other to be saved from eternal damnation and domination, will choose to worship any other thing or anyone other than God himself.

Idols can’t save humans, they cause God’s wrath: Exodus 27-28,35.  Idols can’t take the place of God to be worshiped. God gave a command that Idols must not be worshiped simply because He knows that they don’t have the capacity to deliver humans from the numerous problems that confronts them in different forms.

  • Idols are Man Made

Idols manifest in different forms. It is safe to say that Idol is anything that one places above or at par with God. There are somethings that becomes one’s Idol unconsciously simply because there is an addiction to it. Let’s look at the story of Aaron and the Israelites in the Bible Exodus 32 vs 1-4

REFLECTION:

  1. Is there anyone or anything you place above God?
  2. Is there anything God can ask you for that you will be reluctant to let go of?

CONCLUSION:

God created man in His image and likeness, this is a show of love, He didn’t stop there, when Man fell, He still gave His only begotten son, Jesus Christ to die and shed His blood so as to reconcile man to Himself. God did all these so that man can fellowship with Him and also dominate the earth as originally planned by Him, Genesis 1:28.
