Bible Text: Malachi 1 vs. 6 – 14

Memory Verse: “…If then I be a father, where is my honor?”– Malachi 1 vs 6b

Introduction: To honor means to respect or to hold in high regard. This means that when you honor a person, your thoughts and actions towards that person are thoughts and actions of peace and not of evil. God as our father demands that we honor him. Not from a place of entitlement, but from a place of his love and ownership of our lives.

What do we use to honor God? – Romans 12 vs 1 – 2

  • Our Bodies – Your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit.
  • Our Tongue – By your words you are either justified or condemned.
  • Our Mind – Out of your heart flows the issues of life.
  • Our Substance – You are blessed to be a blessing to the kingdom of God.
  • Our Intelligence – Let your light so shine before men… and glorify God in heaven.

Case Study

Francis is a lover of God. He reads his bible, prays to God but does not see anything wrong in helping his friend during an exam even though the rules are against it. To him, a friend in need is a friend indeed. God should understand. Cynthia is a born-again believer, but she is fond of using certain swear words when she is communicating. She sees these words as being normal. To her, who cares what I say, even my parents use these words.

  • Give examples of words we use regularly that does not honor God.
  • Is Cynthia right by her actions?
  • Is Francis honoring God by helping is friend in an exam?
  • If you are in Francis’s position, what will you do to your best friend that needs help?

Why Honor is Important

  1. When you honor God, it unlocks a dimension of blessing upon your life – Genesis 13 vs 14.
  2. Honoring God would lead to God honoring you – Philippians 2 vs 4 – 10.
  3. God is our father; he deserves our honor – Psalm 103 vs 1 – 3.
  4. God trusts people that Honor him with wealth – Matthew 25 vs 24 – 30.
  5. If you do not honor God, you are automatically honoring Satan – Matthew 6 vs 24.

Conclusion: You were bought with a price by Jesus through his blood. What this means is that God is the owner of your life. Your responsibility to Him is to be one that gives God his honor and does not ascribe it to themselves or the devil. Day by Day, respect God, respect your parents (Gods representatives in your life), and respect constituted authority. Obedience to God is the greatest level of honor you can offer.
